Anthropology Museum
The Anthropology Museum houses a significant collection of around 26,000 items. It celebrates the culture, arts and crafts of the indigenous people of Oceania, concentrating on Australia, the Torres Strait, Melanesia and, to a lesser extent, Polynesia and Micronesia. Items include ethnographic objects and artefacts, photographs, and archaeological remains such as stone tools. They represent many aspects of daily life including hunting and gathering, recreation, body adornment, trade and ceremony. Comparative holdings from places such as Africa and Southeast Asia complement this extensive collection.
The Museum Gallery is located on level 2 of the Michie Building (9) and is open to the public free of charge Tuesday to Thursday, 11:00am– 3:00pm, teaching weeks only. Pre-booked, guided tours outside these times can be arranged by contacting the Museum. Worksheets and activities for school groups can also be provided (the recommended group size is 10-30 students, and a small fee applies).
The Museum provides a range of museum-based services to the public, to scholars and researchers, and to other institutions. Loans from the collection to other institutions for display purposes can be arranged, as can consultations on select anthropological and heritage matters.
The Museum Office is generally open Monday - Thursday, 10:00am – 5:00pm, throughout the year. For inquiries please contact the Museum Collection Administrator:
